Passport mess

In thirteen days, the kiddos and I will go to Sweden to visit my parents for four weeks. We all have been looking forward to it and having finally secured Global Entry for my baby boy also, I thought we were all set to go… Until I received an email from the airline we will be flying with that prompted me to look into passport requirements for travel to Europe. It turns out that rules have changed since I last looked into it and when traveling to Schengen area you need to have a passport that is valid for three months after your departure back home. My oldest daughter’s passport expires in mid-September, about a month and a half after our scheduled return. Getting a new passport, even with expedited service, normally takes up to three weeks. Enter panic mode…

Long story short, we now have an appointment at the DC Regional Passport agency on July 6th, six hours before our flight is takes off to Sweden, and I can only hope that we will make it with my daughter’s new passport in hand.

I wanted to compose a photo that would memorialize this glitch in our travel plans. It looked nice in my head with my daughter standing by our front door with her suitcase that she named Ior, and that she has been traveling to Sweden with ever since she was two and a half years old, holding out her passport. Let’s just say that it looked a bit better in my head.

And here is also an accidental shot that I would have liked better than the planned one, had I had her a bit more toward the middle of the frame and not cut part of her head off. I don’t think that a person’s head always has to be fully in the frame, in fact, I often deliberately leave a part of an individual’s head out of the frame in close-up portraits. In this case, though, it was not deliberate at all, just a lack of time to get the composition right.
