For some reason the sunsets are always so beautiful over the small town of Motala where my parents live in Sweden. Their house is also high up on a hill and they have a beautiful view over the town from their bedroom window. Last year when I was there I captured several of those beautiful sunsets, but later struggled with recovering some detail in the bottom part of the image where you could see a little bit of the town. While getting the exposure right for the sky, the town turned more or less into a dark silhouette.
This year I decided to take several images of the same scene while metering some for the sky and some for the ground with the goal of “exposure stacking” in Photoshop. The resulting image isn’t perfect – heck, it was my first time trying this – but it turned out at least as well as I was hoping it would.
