It’s been a while since I was this excited about picking up my camera every day. This tilt-shift lens is definitely my new love. I’m sure part of it is just the newness of the lens, and the fact that on Monday it has to be boxed up and sent back to Lensrentals that makes me so excited about using it, but does it really matter? By now, all of my favorite photos this year have been shot with this lens.
I spent the morning just observing my two younger kiddos in the playroom with my camera in the hand and kept my eyes open for any good moments I could capture, while also taking photos of random objects in the room to see how to work the lens to get different parts of them in focus in a way that you wouldn’t be able to with a regular lens. And then I saw my baby boy dreamily looking out of the window. He likes to run around in his underpants when I burn wood in the woodstove in the playroom because it gets pretty hot there. With the tilt-shift, I was able to blur out the lower part of his body to obscure his half-nakedness a bit while focusing on what was important for this image – his face and the window. I even managed to nail the focus where I wanted it to be, which isn’t always that easy with a manual-only focus lens. Needless to say, I’m pretty happy with this shot.
